Knowledge of first principles in structural engineering is key to success in a Canadian engineering firm. Some internationally educated engineers started their careers by running software programs such as ETABS and SAP. Although this knowledge of software is necessary, it is not quite enough to succeed as an engineer in Canadian companies; the reason is that engineering firms require their employees to have a good grasp of engineering fundamentals such as structural analysis. For this reason PEO assigns technical examinations to P.Eng. applicants so that they will improve their knowledge of engineering theory in order that they can apply it in engineering practice.
